Our National Flag
A flag symbolizes a country across the globe. As a free nation, we possess a magnificent national flag. It embodies our freedom and sovereignty. However, we did not acquire our national flag easily or overnight. There is a rich and extensive history behind obtaining our national flag. Prior to 26 March 1971, Bangladesh was not an independent nation. It was a part of Pakistan and referred to as East Pakistan at that time. We were denied our rightful rights and privileges. Therefore, it became unavoidable to struggle against Pakistan. Our freedom fighters raised the national flag and fought bravely against the oppressive rulers. Following a nine-month liberation war, Bangladesh achieved victory through tremendous sacrifices. As a result, our national flag now flies proudly in the free skies of Bangladesh. In this manner, we attained our national flag. Our national flag has a specific ratio of length to width, which is 10:6. It features a combination of two colors: green and red. The green color represents the everlasting beauty of our homeland, while the red color signifies the blood shed by our freedom fighters. We hoist our national flag at the start of each day in our educational institutions. Various government and non-government offices also raise the national flag regularly. Additionally, we display our flag on different national days and traditional celebrations in Bangladesh. However, it is flown at half-mast during any national or international days of mourning. We take immense pride in our national flag. It serves as the foundation of our spirit, hope, and inspiration. We must always uphold it in its exalted position at all costs.
